National Dark-Sky Week was started in 2003 when people on an astronomy message board expressed their concern about light pollution and that it would be great if there were a night that everyone turned out their lights. Since then, it has been endorsed by the International Dark-Sky Association, the American Astronomical Society, the Astronomical League, and Sky & Telescope. For the future, the goal of National Dark-Sky Week is to increase participation to make the event bigger, better, and more effective every year. Jennifer E. Barlow, NDSW founder, hopes that someday this event will be spread internationally so that everyone can participate in the campaign against light pollution and share in the wonder of the night sky. Jennifer Barlow is currently an undergraduate student at the University of Virginia with a major in Spanish and a minor in astronomy. In the future, she plans to attend graduate school for Spanish literature, but wishes to remain greatly involved in astronomy and dark-sky-related issues.
